Gernot Süßmuth began his musical career already as a child. At the age of nine, he appeared as a soloist with an orchestra for the first time. This was followed by prizes at competitions for children and young people. At the age of sixteen, he enrolled at Berlin’s Academy of Music Hanns Eisler, where he studied with Prof. Heinz Schunk. After his studies, he was engaged as concertmaster by the Radio Symphony Orchestra Berlin. From 2000 to 2002 he was concertmaster of the Staatskapelle Berlin, and has been concertmaster of the Staatskapelle Weimar since August 2002. Between 1983 and 2000 he dedicated himself to string quartet playing in the Petersen Quartet, with which he performed on the world’s major concert stages and recorded numerous CDs, several of which were awarded prizes. In addition to quartet playing, he appears regularly as a soloist and performs together with other renowned chamber music partners, including Steven Bishop-Kovacevich, Paul Meyer, Norbert Brainin, and Martin Lovett. Gernot Süßmuth is artistic director of the European Union Chamber Orchestra. For many years, he has devoted himself to the training of young musical talent at the colleges of music in Berlin and Weimar. In 2004 he was appointed honorary professor at Weimar’s Liszt School of Music.
