The Aperto Piano Quartet was founded in 2000 on the occasion of a concert in Berlin’s Philharmonie. Gernot Süßmuth (violin) and Hans-Jakob Eschenburg (violoncello) were founding members of the Petersen Quartet, with which they performed for nearly twenty years. They are joined in the Aperto Piano Quartet by violist Stefan Fehlandt, who also pursues his passion for chamber music in the Vogler Quartet, among other ensembles. With Frank-Immo Zichner (piano), who has performed with top-ranking quartets, including the Vogler, Petersen, and Leipzig String Quartets, and also made a career for himself as a piano soloist, the Aperto Piano Quartet has become an ensemble that distinguishes itself through “cultivated sonority and sensitive ensemble playing” (Joachim Wormsbächer, FAZ). The members of the quartet received their training at Berlin’s Academy of Music Hanns Eisler. Important impulses were provided by Menahem Pressler (Beaux Arts Trio), György Kurtág, and Norbert Brainin (Amadeus Quartet). The repertoire of the Aperto Piano Quartet includes the piano quartets of Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms, Schumann, Fauré, and Reger, as well as works by Mahler, Schnittke, and composers of our time.
